Study with Aswin
What Will You Study? This year-long course explores the philosophical, cosmological, and textual foundations of Jyotiṣa, approaching Indian astrology as a coherent intellectual tradition rather than a collection of techniques. We begin with the Upaniṣads and the Bhagavad Gītā, examining reality, consciousness, and karma as foundations for astrological interpretation. We then explore the sidereal zodiac through Ṛgvedic hymns, investigating its metaphysical foundations and relationship to creation. The course elucidates the qualities and responsibilities of the Jyotiṣaka, followed by an in-depth study of the Nakṣatras, their deities, and symbolism through the Ṛgveda. Planetary significations are likewise explored through their Vedic foundations. Building on this groundwork, we study the houses, Puruṣārtha and Guṇa, elements and modalities, and the functional roles of planets. We study Dṛṣṭi (aspects), Sambandha (planetary relationships), and Yogas, investigating how astrological combinations acquire meaning and why they sometimes do not. The programme concludes with Vargas (divisional charts), time-lord systems, and annual predictive methods, bringing these foundations and techniques together into a coherent approach to interpretation and prediction. A Different Approach to Jyotiṣa The emphasis throughout is on understanding the rationale underlying astrological principles through philosophical inquiry and textual study, rather than relying on memorisation or inherited interpretations.
